Auburn Bridges
January 1998. Far in the rear is the Foresthill Bridge, which
crosses 750 feet above the American River. If the Auburn Dam ever
gets built, the water level will be somewhere up there. Nearer is
the No Hands Bridge, so named because for many years it had no
railings. Originally a railroad bridge, it is now part of the
Western States Trail. When it was built around 1911, it was the
largest reinforced concrete bridge in the world. And it has held up
better than many newer bridges just upstream, that were washed away
during winter floods. My riding partners that day were Tim Bustos
and Andy Jennings.
