The show was after
dinner, and before the traditional dancing part of the reception. John
and some of his friends are or were professional entertainers. Jacquie
also has talented friends, and we heard their exquisite voices. The show
took place on the Crest's big stage, home of many a concert by well-known
musical artists.
Greg
Milstein - Show Host and Balloon Jazz
Greg is the Senior Field Specialist of the New York based National
Circus Project, and makes his living running programs in hundreds of schools
in the Northeastern states. He is also a graduate of the Ringling
Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College. Aside from hosting the
show, Greg presented Balloon Jazz, a performance originally written for
his 1990 appearance in the Soviet State Circus in Riga,
Latvia. Greg and John went to Latvia and were the first Americans
in the 100 year history of the Riga Circus to perform in their ring. In
Balloon Jazz, Greg tells a story with balloons, which he inflates and
sculpts to the tunes of classical music and American jazz. Greg also juggled
and did other bits between the main acts.
Anna
Venticher and Lynn Vaughan
Lynn and Anna sang "When I Say I Do," a duet by Clint Black
and Lisa Hartman Black. Lynn was a bridesmaid and has sung in many many
weddings in the past. In the wedding ceremony she sang "Today".
Anna loves music, and also signing, and you was the primary interpreter
in our wedding. They both have lovely voices and they mesh well together.
Anna and Lynn were very excited about performing on the stage at the Crest.
Both Anna and Lynn work for STEP.
Samoan
Slap Dancer
Even I don't know what a Samoan Slap Dancer does, but it sounds painful.
We were finally able to book Keiko, from Pago Pago in American Samoa.
"325 pounds of moving, slapping flesh!" Don't look at me, this
was something Jacquie wanted. Plans were for him to be coming up all the
way from the Polynesian Cultural Center in San Jose!
Nathan
Hoover - MUni (Mountain Unicycling)
Nathan is a software engineer, mountain climber, cyclist, and mountain
unicyclist (MUni). He hardly ever drives his seven mile (each way) commute
from his home in Los Gatos to work, and uses his unicycle whenever he
can. How to show mountain unicycling in a theater? We found out. Nathan
got help from fellow mountain unicyclists Bruce Bundy, Brett Bymaster,
John and Woody Hooten, Tim Bustos, Geoffrey Faraghan, and his son Beau.
In the picture, he's riding down stairs into a backyard pool.
Terry
Vierra and the "Neatles" - Beatles medley
Terry was manager at Jacquie's company STEP, but she's also a professional
singer. She has been a backup vocalist on several pop and gospel CDs.
Her voice has been heard on many radio and television commercials. She
has performed the National Anthem for many special events, such as San
Francisco Giants games, professional tennis and soccer matches, and even
for the returning Desert Storm troops in place of Whitney Houston. She
was a regular guest vocalist on the television show Coast to Coast. She
regularly performs at weddings and other special events. In our show,
Terry's band the "Neatles" was assembled just for this show. They sang
a medley of classic Beatles songs, including a special Mountain Unicycling
version of Eleanor Rigby. Mike Martin, the Neatle's lead guitarist, is
also the lead guitarist for Bandit, an opening band for Johnny
Lee. Davin Stidger plays bass, currently with local band The Romp.
Drummer Tony Dey is a drum instructor at Skip's Music. He's a Sacramento
area musical icon, and currently plays in the band Sugar Boom Boom.
John
Foss - Unicycles
For those of you that don't know him, John is a unicyclist (so that
explains the ring and the web site!). In his sordid past, he worked for
the National Circus Project (with Greg Milstein), and was a professional
circus performer. He has been the world champion of Pairs Freestyle once,
Racing twice, and Individual Freestyle three times, plus a few other things.
The
King
Okay, so there was no Samoan Slap Dancer (though I tried to hire one last
minute to surprise Jacquie!). We wanted to surprise our audience, so at
the end of the show we introduced "The King," and it was the
king of rock & roll, Elvis! Unlike the lip-synching I was expecting,
this Elvis sang for real. He did several songs, including one that turned
out to be our first dance.
